Crank Some Crawford 10:00 am

Thursday, April 19th 2012

Let's do a ride with a little elevation gain to get our hill climbing gears warmed up! There is not much traffic these nice April days. It is a good time to ride route 302 towards Crawford Notch.

Destination: Lunch at the pond across from the Willey House. Pack your own lunch.

Meet at the Attitash parking lot, ready to ride at 10:00 am.

The ride to the Willey House from Attitash up route 302 is about 29 miles round trip. It is NOT HARD -- it is easier than Bear Notch Road, a gradual climb with flatter sections of relief. The ride back is marvelous.

Those that want to burn some extra calories can continue 2.5 miles up the notch to the Crawford RR station, then return to meet everyone else for lunch at the Willey House.

For a shorter option, start in Bartlett Village (24 miles total) or at the parking area for the Sawyer River Road (on the left, just after the new bridge over the Sawyer River; ~18 miles total).

Join the crowd as they ride by: ~ 10:15 at Bartlett Village, ~10:30 at Sawyer River Road.

Do you need a map? See the link below. Even if you don't need one, take a look at the elevation profile AFTER you finish the ride... and feel Good!!

Saturday Chowda' Fest Ride

Saturday April 14th 2012

Looks like we will have a Sunny Warm Saturday!!!

There will be a "Chowda' Fest" on Saturday afternoon in North Fryeburg at the Saco Valley Fire Station. This is where we often meet and park for rides in the North Fryeburg region. It is a benefit for the efforts to restore the Old Stowe Town Hall. It is lots of Chowda' tasting and a contest to determine the best Chowda' (can be clam, fish, lobster, corn or vegetarian).

I'll bet there is none of that "Manhattan" red stuff....

An eight dollar donation allows you all you can slurp.

Here is the link for the event:
https://kezarlife.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/stow-chowda-fest-flyer-2012.pdf

The festivities and tastings commence at 4:30 pm, so how about doing a ride in the North Fryeburg/Stow area first and then going for the Chowda' at 4:30?

The ride will start at the park next to the Saco Valley Fire Station in North Fryeburg, corner of Route 113 and South Chatham Road, then travels out to Cornshop Road, looping back on Fish Street to MacNeil, then up Union Hill Road to Meadow Road to the Stow Store. This will give a 23 mile ride. Adding the Chatham loop adds another 7 miles.

Meet at 2:00 pm.

Park far away from the fire station, off the road along the park or across the street so as not to block the area for the Chowda' Festivities.

Weather to Ride or Weather not to Ride???

Thursday April 12th and Saturday April 14th "Chowda' Fest"

That is the question.....

I did a short ride today in sun, clouds, drizzle, rain and hail. Looks like a similar weather pattern again tomorrow. It was still nice to get out and pedal for awhile. Here is a meeting time and place and tomorrow morning look out your window and decide whether or not it is riding weather or not.

11:00 am, ready to ride in North Conway, at the public parking lot behind the Eastern Slope Inn. The ride will be either West Side Road and Passaconaway (20 miles) or a shorter Tour De North Conway (over to Cranmore, up Old Barteltt Road, Intervale Cross, route 16A to Town Hall Road and back). Route choice will be made at the meeting point depending on weather and depending on who (if anyone!!) shows up.

Sunny Warm Saturday!!!

Saturday looks like a great day to ride. I heard that there will be a "Chowda' Fest" on Saturday afternoon in North Fryeburg at the Saco Valley Fire Station. I am still arranging a meeting/parking place, since I don't want to interfere with the fest by parking in our usual spot.

The festivities and tastings commence at 4:30 pm, so I will set up a sunny, warm, mid-afternoon ride (start at 2:00) over in the North Fryeburg flats and Stow Store area (20 to 25 mile ride).

Check this blog or the Mount Washington Valley Bicycling Club website for more details - I will post details tomorrow night. If you don't want to ride but want to taste chowda, just meet the riders at the fest at 4:30.

Kanc-Passaconaway Loop from Conway Village

Thursday April 5th, 2012

Looks like Thursday will be a fine day for an early spring ride! Sunny and low 50's.

Let's do a short ride from Conway Village up the Kanc to Lower Falls then down Passaconaway Road back to Conway Village. This way we have a tailwind and a downhill ride back to the car. The Kanc has very little traffic in this season and Passaconaway is still gated, so we should have a quiet ride. For a longer option, ride up to Rocky Gorge.

Meet in Conway Village in the parking lot behind the Mountain Center Physical Therapy and the Laconia Savings Bank, near the junction of route 16 and 153.

Ready to Ride at 10:00 am.

Total distance: 15-20 miles depending on how far up the Kanc you travel before returning on Passaconaway Road

Also -- if you would like to ride on Saturday....

There is a Pancake Breakfast at the Bartlett Elementary School on Saturday morning from 8:00 to 11:00. The maple syrup served with the pancakes is made by the 6th graders in the sugarhouse behind the school. All you can eat for $6 (adults) $4 (kids).

How about starting a ride out of the school parking lot (in front of the library) at 10:00 am?

If you want to energize on pancakes beforehand, meet at the school at 9:00.

Either park near the school, or, if you want to ride a bit first, meet at the Attitash parking lot, ready to ride to the pancakes at 8:45 am.

Ride options? One group could do Bear Notch Road, up and back (16 miles round trip from Attitash). Another group can do the River Road and Stillings Grant (11 flat miles round trip from Attitash). More miles? Do Bear Notch up and over and back (26 miles RT) or go up to Crawford Notch.

Put on your calendar: The Mount Washington Valley Bicycling Club Annual Spring Gathering at the Moat is April 24th starting at 5:30 pm: www.mwvbicyclingclub.org
